Expansion of the Veggies

So, there are a lot of projects on my list. One of the most recent is expanding the veggy garden. Let's see what the process looks like.

The start of this project was adding 10 posts around the entire garden. One may ask why would you need posts. We have these "hungry" deer, that have plenty to eat everywhere else, but particularly like my veggies. However, I like my veggies too. So I want to keep them and share them, as gifts for family and friends.

We used the landscaping beams for this, although this is not their usual purpose. That is, they are usually not stood on end, as noted in the picture, but laying flat and bordering beds of various flowers. Eventually our goal is to wrap the garden with wire fencing to keep the deer out.

The next progression was adding the boards along the side. We used 2x8x12's that were natural pine. We had to add additional corner supports in the inside cords of 1x1 to help keep boards together when they did not reach the span of the pillar landscaping beams. We painted them with linseed oil for sealing them. We were pleased with how this is a natural sealing agent, that is not going to be a problem with our veggies. It is also important to note that using heat treated or pressure treated lumber can be caustic (basically not good for eating). Also noted an employee at a store recommended cinder bricks for sides of a garden. After a bit of research, there are some not so good things in cement, that I just do not trust to be in my garden. All natural, is the way I like it.

Pictured, you can see the progression of the various progressions of the garden. As there was grass on the left side of the entrance between beds, and as we move to the right, you can see the grass that was to be dug up for a brick pathway.

Onto the next steps.......
